Sports are a very large part of the game. Though originally played separately, they were gradually incorporated into the game itself. Industry and culture developed alongside their introduction to the game. Sports leagues in various sports were established, statistics kept track of (which are now lost), players paid in various currenices, and sports cards of the kids that played were created, sold, and traded. The quality of the athletes that played during the City era usually ranged from terrible to above average but several great athletes made brief appearances. The most notable instance is when a local star athlete planned on joining the game just to play football for the Woodland Warriors. The problem was that he was so good that he completely dominated the games. In response, the R.O.K. Bombers began playing violently in an attempt to remain competitive. This made the star athlete quit within a week in order to avoid potential serious injuries of fellow players. Many basketball scrimmages were played between the City and Eternal City eras and were mostly dominated by Greg Smith. Greg Smith also came in first place in a soccer league that took Era in the first half of the 2010s.
Rosters
Historically and currently, there has often been a shortage of players. This has resulted in many players playing for multiple teams. If both of a player's teams are playing against each other, the player either chooses which team they want to play on or plays for a team with higher priority based on contractual obligations or league rules. During the City Era, players usually played for the teams of their friends. This would often result in teams fielding players from their own or allied areas. However, it wasn't uncommon for players to be paid to play for teams outside of their normal circle of friends as well. The Eternal City Era began this same way but quickly developed a higher level of organization that resulted in different types of teams, such as semi-professional, residential, regional, and national teams. In both eras, many teams consisted of predominantly volunteer, though paid players have not been uncommon either.
Teams
Teams usually play in multiple sports, however, their are instances where a team only plays in 1 specific sport. Teams sometimes have home fields or courts, but often do not.
Competitions
During the City Era, many leagues and associations were created with various lengths of seasons. Each league focused on a specific sport. Leagues often kept track of results as well as some player statistics. Leagues would often have multiple divisons as well as play-offs and a final championship game after the regular season. During the Eternal City Era, smaller tournaments became the norm, though traditional seasons still take place. Team results and rankings, rather than individual player statistics, now receive more focus. Elo ratings did not come into use until the Eternal City Era.
Games
The length of games can vary drastically. During the City Era, traditionally timed games were loosely timed using a watch. Beginning in the Intergame Era, games would be played either to a certain score or a total aggregate score. This continued into the Eternal City Era, though timed games are still sometimes played. Timed games now use timers and are kept track of more accurately.
Esports
Esports were also played during the City Era, mostly on the Atari 2600, but sometimes on Nintendo, Super Nintendo, and old computer systems. Esports differed from regular sports in that players usually represented their country rather than a club that they were signed to for money. Esports statistics were kept but unfortunately have been lost to history. The major cities for esports during this time were Boboron, Delm, Rome, and sometimes Kelm. During the Intergame Era, Xelm hosted several significant esports events. Esports continued to be played in the Eternal City Era in Nidraw and Blueopolis.
